Jacking Around at the Mill
Posted By The Miller on January 1, 2012

Dave Gahimer and I are starting the job of raising the mill to put in the new posts. The floors are sagging ……. so, they need to be jacked up before the new posts go in. We figure moving the floors up 1/2 in. at a time is safe. This is moving 3 floors of a 1870s building so, we don’t want to hurry. We plan to raise it 1/2 in. once a month.

Mike,
Are you raising 1/2 inch over the course of a month? ie. and 1/8 inch per week or just 1/2 inch all at once each month? I would do 1/8 inch per week….1/2 inch all at once sounds like a lot of movement on that old building.

We raise it 1/2 in each time. It is rather tricky ———– We can not take out a support and put in the jack. We have to put in braces to hold the mill while we take out one support and use the jack. Then remove jack and put support back in. Then move to the next post – there are six posts we are working on. When we push up the building it not only pushes the entire mill up (Including the roof) but, it also pushes the walls out slightly. So, very very slowly and check everything on every floor as we go.
